PORTLAND, MAINE – Mainebiz recently highlighted the growth of mass timber in the Northeast and featured the expertise of Consigli Project Executive Matt Tonello, one of “mass timber’s most passionate and experienced advocates.”

As an industry leader with more than 25 projects incorporating timber solutions, Consigli’s teams – advised by Tonello – work with partners locally and globally to advance mass timber as a sustainable building material option.

Alongside key project partners and clients, Tonello offered insight into how Consigli has helped support expanding the use and development of mass timber locally in Maine to support not just project needs, but also the regional economy and industry.

“[Tonello] co-founded the Maine Mass Timber Advisory Council, which advises the University of Maine’s Mass Timber Commercialization Center, and serves as a research and development partner with the university’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center in Orono to innovate timber lamination and procurement processes, and with a goal of seeing mass timber manufacturing come to the state for the first time.”

Highlighted as one of the driving forces behind the expansion of Maine’s use of mass timber, Mainebiz detailed Tonello’s collaborative work in support of overcoming one of the top challenges associated with mass timber production: bringing manufacturing capabilities to New England, and more locally, to Maine.

“Tonello is developing a prototype for a lamination process using wooden nails instead of glue, which he envisions could be produced in Maine, perhaps using existing capabilities.”

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Williams College’s Davis Center has been honored by Engineering News-Record (ENR) New England as a recipient of the 2024 Award of Merit in its annual Regional Best Project Awards. It received the award in the Higher Education/Research category for the New England region, and was recently featured in ENR’s November issue.

The Davis Center, the College’s center for the advancement of institutional diversity, equity and inclusion, connects multiple buildings on campus and transformed existing facilities to better reflect the Center’s mission and serve current and future academic and cultural needs. Through a major new addition and comprehensive energy retrofit renovations to the 19th century Rice and Jenness Houses, the new Davis Center provides fully accessible resources and community spaces for students and faculty.

Utilizing mass timber and engineered wood hybrid materials, the all-electric project removed fossil fuel-based heating systems and was built to rigorous environmental standards to support the College’s commitment to sustainability. It is targeting Petal Certification under the Living Building Challenge, as well as strict Energy Use Index requirements to reduce energy loads on campus.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges were evaluated on their ability to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

PORTLAND, ME – In its annual Best of the Best awards, Engineering News Record (ENR) recognized Bowdoin College’s John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies & Barry Mills Hall as the best Higher Education/Research project of 2023.

Members of the バカラ カジノ project team joined representatives from Bowdoin College and HGA at the ENR Award of Excellence gala in New York City this week to celebrate their design and construction achievement. The winning projects are drawn from the Regional Best Projects Awards series, which represents outstanding projects and projects teams from across the country.

Matthew Tonello, Eric Bottaro and Emerald Boisselle-Byers of Consigli; Rebecca Celis of HGA; John Simoneau of Bowdoin College.

The first pure, commercial-scale mass timber structure in Maine, the $28.5 million, 46,000 sq. ft. and 100% electric project was completed on schedule in less than two years despite significant impacts to supply chain and schedules. The project team was evaluated on how well it was able to overcome challenges and contribute to industry innovation, as well as on overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

PORTLAND, ME – The John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies and Barry Mills Hall on the Bowdoin College’s campus has been honored by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a 2023 New England Best Project of the Year. It received top honors in the Higher Education/Research category.

The first pure mass timber structure in Maine, the $28.5 million, 46,000 sq. ft. project utilized glue laminated beams, columns and trusses, as well as other materials. To mitigate potential supply chain and skilled workforce challenges, Consigli proactively secured pricing for the mass timber ahead of significant lumber price increases.

To further support cost savings, Consigli utilized a 4D model using cost analysis to compare mass timber with a more traditional steel, concrete and masonry superstructure and demonstrated that mass timber prefabrication strategies was the best choice for the project. Funding for the cost comparison was supported by the U.S. Forest Service, making Bowdoin College one of just 10 institutions to receive agency funding to bring sustainable change to the nation’s working forests and forest-reliant communities.

In addition to receiving this New England regional honor, Consigli also received ENR New York’s top award in the K-12 Education category for its work on the Bronx High School of Science – Stanley Manne ’52 Institute of Science.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges as regional Best Project winners were evaluated on how they were able to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

MILFORD, MA – Steven Burke, Director of Sustainability, recently spoke with the Washington Business Journal about how clients can best employ building materials like wood, concrete and steel to achieve their project and sustainability goals.

Weighing in alongside other industry experts, Burke in particular emphasized the utility of mass timber as a building material, and how its use as a low embodied carbon material offers significant sustainability benefits to construction projects.

“The use of wood, and specifically mass timber, can have a considerable advantage when it comes to achieving environmental goals when the wood is harvested and utilized sustainably. Inevitably, materials sourced from our built environment like steel and concrete generate greenhouse gas emissions while they are produced, whereas the use of wood stores carbon even after the trees have been cut down. Additionally, by utilizing wood, we are able to leverage existing, naturally occurring materials in a project’s design and construction.”

Consigli has championed the use of mass timber in the industry, and its teams have coordinated and managed its use in more than fifteen projects incorporating timber solutions in design and construction. While often used in higher education, the use of mass timber continues to expand to wider-ranging, and larger-scale projects in various markets sectors.

Additionally, Consigli collaborates with research institutions, universities and testing laboratories locally and globally to continue the advancement of mass timber as a building material.
